Bringing Back Pipelined ADCs in the Era of SAR ADCs

Date: Fri., Dec. 08th, 2022, 04:00 PM – 05:00 PM (MST) Alberta

Location: Virtual

Sponsored by: IEEE Southern Alberta Section, Jt. CAS04/SSC37 Technical Chapter

Topic: Recent Trends and Advances in High Performance Fractional-N PLL Design

While SAR ADCs have become one of the most successful ADC architectures over the past decade owing to the compactness and the power-efficiency in advanced CMOS processes, pipelined ADCs seem to be somewhat out of the designer’s attention. However, we still can find some recent designs reporting competitive performances, often with SAR ADCs as their sub stage, utilizing opamp-free residue amplifiers. As high-speed single channel ADCs is preferable for time-interleaving (TI) to reduce the number of channels, the pipelined architecture is likely to remain as one of the best suited ones in achieving both high resolution and high speed. With this perspective, this talk reviews the development history of the pipelined ADCs and introduces recent architectures including the single-amp dual-residue pipelined ADC.

Recent Trends and Advances in High Performance Fractional-N PLL Design

Date: Fri., Nov. 20th, 2022, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (MST) Alberta

Location: Virtual

Topic: Recent Trends and Advances in High Performance Fractional-N PLL Design

High performance fractional-N phase-locked loops (PLLs) are essential elements of any advanced electronic systems. In recent years, both analog and all-digital PLLs employing sampling or sub-sampling phase detector have gained popularity and demonstrated below 100-fs integrated jitter and superior figure-of-merit. This talk focuses on this PLL architecture and elaborates the advanced design techniques to achieve low jitter, low fractional spurs, fast locking, and low power operation. Both circuits design and digital calibration techniques will be presented in detail. In addition, recent advances in reference clock generation will also be discussed as it is crucial for high performance PLLs.

IEEE EMBS Chapter Distinguished Lecture (DL) Series:

Speaker: Dr. Hermano Igo Krebs of MIT

Topic: How Robotics are Revolutionizing Rehabilitation

Capitalizing on the new understanding of brain plasticity, we introduced a paradigm shift in clinical practice in 1989 when we initiated the development of the MIT-Manus robot for neuro-rehabilitation and deployed it into the clinic. Since then we collected evidence to support the potential of enhancing and augmenting recovery following a stroke, first during the sub-acute and then the chronic phase. Our efforts and that of others led to the endorsements starting in 2010 from the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, and the Veterans Administration for the use of rehabilitation robots for the Upper Extremity, but not yet for the Lower Extremity. AHA recommendations were the same in the 2016 revision. Furthermore, it was demonstrated in the VA system that upper extremity robotic therapy has an economic advantage over manual therapy. More recently we completed a pragmatic study RATULS under the auspices of the National Health Service of the United Kingdom and its NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme, which enrolled 770 stroke patients. Thus, we have developed novel robotic treatment and evaluation tools and have managed to collect the experimental evidence that demonstrates the unequivocal therapeutic benefits stemming from robot-aided rehabilitation for the upper extremity as well as present shortcomings. This talk will present an overview of our past rehabilitation robotics efforts and more recent efforts addressing the identified shortcomings.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Hermano Igo Krebs is a Principal Research Scientist at MIT’s Mechanical Engineering Department and the Director of The77Lab. the77lab.mit.edu He holds affiliate positions as an Adjunct Professor at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Neurology, and as a Visiting Professor at Fujita Health University, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Japan), at Osaka University, Mechanical Science and Bioengineering Department (Japan), at Keio University, System Design Engineering Department (Japan) and at Loughborough University, The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering (UK).
