IEEE EMBS Chapter Distinguished Lecture (DL) Series:

Speaker: Dr. Hermano Igo Krebs of MIT

Topic: How Robotics are Revolutionizing Rehabilitation

Capitalizing on the new understanding of brain plasticity, we introduced a paradigm shift in clinical practice in 1989 when we initiated the development of the MIT-Manus robot for neuro-rehabilitation and deployed it into the clinic. Since then we collected evidence to support the potential of enhancing and augmenting recovery following a stroke, first during the sub-acute and then the chronic phase. Our efforts and that of others led to the endorsements starting in 2010 from the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, and the Veterans Administration for the use of rehabilitation robots for the Upper Extremity, but not yet for the Lower Extremity. AHA recommendations were the same in the 2016 revision. Furthermore, it was demonstrated in the VA system that upper extremity robotic therapy has an economic advantage over manual therapy. More recently we completed a pragmatic study RATULS under the auspices of the National Health Service of the United Kingdom and its NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme, which enrolled 770 stroke patients. Thus, we have developed novel robotic treatment and evaluation tools and have managed to collect the experimental evidence that demonstrates the unequivocal therapeutic benefits stemming from robot-aided rehabilitation for the upper extremity as well as present shortcomings. This talk will present an overview of our past rehabilitation robotics efforts and more recent efforts addressing the identified shortcomings.

Towards Wireless Networking, Sensing, and Security in the Sub-Terahertz Regime: Design and Experiments

Date: Aug 11th, 2022, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM (MDT)

The spectrum above 100 GHz offers plentiful bandwidth for ultra-high-speed communication and high-resolution sensing, thereby providing a promising foundation for realizing unprecedented capabilities in next-generation wireless networks. In this talk, I will begin by presenting emerging transceiver architecture that can enable directional sub-THz steering without traditional multi-antenna arrays. I will discuss how to exploit the key characteristics of sub-THz signals and the proposed architecture for high-resolution localization. Such sensing modalities can then be exploited to enable highly directional, high data rate links that are robust to client and environmental mobility. I will address one of the main concerns with sub-THz networking which is high power consumption by introducing the first ultra-wideband retro-directive backscatter above 100 GHz. Finally, I will discuss new security paradigms in this regime: while the conventional wisdom suggests that physical layer security improves with narrow beams, I will explain new vulnerabilities introduced by the control plane as well as emerging low-cost smart reflecting surfaces. I will conclude the talk by illustrating fundamentally new techniques for wireless authentication and security.

Moon Lander Program and Science in Space

Date: Tue., Jun 21st 2022, 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM (MDT)

Presented By: Yonatan Winetraub of SpaceIL

Register Online Here

This presentation will provide a behind the scenes look at the challenges and opportunities of working on three vastly different projects, all leading toward potential scientific studies in space. Attendees will learn about the technical innovations and obstacles associated with building and launching a private interplanetary lander, which in 2019 was the first private mission to reach the moon. The presentation will then talk about the development of a STEM project that was launched to the International Space Station in February 2022. The goal of this project is to study and control the growth of biological organisms in space. Lastly, the presentation will discuss a molecular imaging system to study living organisms at the cellular level. This system based on Optical Coherence Tomography and machine learning is capable of providing non-invasive imaging of living tissue at the molecular level, allowing longitudinal studies of healthy and diseased tissue over time to better understand the development, progression and potential treatment response for diseases such as cancer. These projects work toward a long-term goal of future lunar missions providing scientific platforms for molecular biology experiments studying the development, progression, and treatment of disease in space.

Webinar: Inductive Bias in Deep Learning: From Structure to Training

Date: Wed., Apr 20th 2022, 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM (MDT)

Presented by: Dr. Yani Ioannou, Assistant Professor, University of Calgary

Abstract: Machine learning requires assumptions and data, with the assumptions based on domain knowledge. With the exponential increase in dataset set and computation we’ve been able to reduce the domain expertise and inductive bias we integrate in computer vision models, from manually designed features such as SIFT, to learning representations with deep learning. Recently this approach has been pushed even further, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), integrating strong inductive bias in their structure, being replaced with Vision Transformers (ViT), or even fully-connected neural networks with alternative training regimes. In this talk, Dr. Yanni Ioannou, Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, will discuss the current limits of this approach, and the need for more domain-agnostic learning.
